Living
in Australia: |
If
you're coming from Europe or the USA, Australia
is going to look pretty cheap. Food, in particular,
is great value. Accommodation is also reasonably
priced, and if you're staying in hostels or on-site
caravans or camping, and mostly making your own
meals you could conceivably get by on about US$20
to US$25 a day. Travel will be your biggest expense
- distances are long - so if you're moving around
a bit, eating out once or twice a day and staying
in budget hotels, plan for around US$50 a day.
Students from all over the world come to Australia
to take advantage of our top-notch education and
enjoy our friendly hospitality and cultural diversity.
Australia has a very good health care system.
All Australians pay a Medicare levy (additional
tax) to fund the public health system and ensure
everyone gets access to public system doctors,
hospitals and other health care services.
Australia has a fantastic variety of food. Our
top quality meat, fish, fruits and vegetables
are exported globally. There is a large range
of fruit and vegetables available at Australian
produce markets

Costs
& Expenses: |
An Australian Government survey showed that in
terms of total costs-including tuition fees and
living expenses-Australia was consistently less
expensive than the USA and UK. Tuition fees will
vary contingent on the course or institution.
Australia offers excellent value for money, with
living expenses and tuition costs in Australia
considerably less expensive than the United Kingdom
(UK) and the United States of America (USA).
Tuition fees vary according to the institution
and course selected but this website provides
a guide to the average costs. Scholarships are
available for international students but the competition
is intense and most of the international students
in Australia are full-fee paying students.

Tuition
Fees
International students are charged up-front
tuition fees. Institutions sometimes make an
additional charge to cover other costs associated
with being a student: student organisation membership,
library and laboratory costs and sports facility
costs. Some courses make specific charges for
excursions, books, stationery and other essential
material. These costs will vary depending on
the course or institution therefore average
costs are provided below and should only be
used as a guide. All school tuition fees are
exempt from Australia's Goods and Services Tax
(GST).
Institutions will advise when to pay your
tuition fees and acceptable methods of payment.

Education
System: |
Today,
the Australian educational system is systematically
organized into three broad levels - primary, secondary,
and tertiary. Of these, the tertiary educational
sector comprises the widest variety of choices
- including universities providing foundation
courses, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees,
Technical and Further Education (TAFE) colleges
and private vocational. Australia's
main capital city universities have been consistently
ranked within the top 50 universities in the Asia-Pacific
region. Three business schools, which have consistently
ranked in the top ten in the region, are
The Melbourne Business school at the University
of Melbourne
The Australian Graduate School of Management at
the University of New South Wales (UNSW)
The Graduate School of Management at Australian
National University

Working
in Australia: |
International
students in Australia on a student visa can apply
for permission to work up to 20 hours a week during
course time and full-time during vacation periods.
- The income you get from working in Australia
should only supplement your income and not
be used as your only source of income. Before
you come to Australia, you must show that
you have enough money to pay for living expenses,
education costs and travel for the duration
of your study.
-
Some institutions offer
a job placement service. If work is available
you will need to obtain a tax file number
from the Australian Tax Office. You will need
to contact them about their requirements and
processes.
-
Most students take part-time
or casual jobs at some time during their studies.
Some jobs are closely tied to courses of study
(such as part-time work by law students in
solicitors' offices). Some students teach
school children or get jobs on campus in the
canteen, the bookshop, in the institution's
offices and as lab assistants. Some jobs are
entirely outside the education community such
as bartending, babysitting, gardening, hospitality,
sales, computers, restaurants, or fruit picking
